The new limited edition of Polder sofa by the Dutch designer Hella Jongerius in collaboration with the Swiss company Vitra and American fabric manufacturer Maharam, brings into your home autumn shades and warm, earthy colours, as well as a tangible pleasure from the interplay between different textures.

In Holland Polder means artificial lands reclaimed from the sea, by using dikes and drainage canals. By combining cushions of different shades, Hella Jongerius has created a sofa that mimicks the division of land strips, underlining the allegory with the usage of different textures of fabric.

The corpus of Polder sofa is as low-lying and flat, accentuating its horizontal surface. Designer Hella Jongerius has carefully chosen five combinations of colours and fabrics, underlining their characteristics with high-tech threads and big buttons from natural materials. The new sofa unites the best fabrics from the Hella Jongerius collections for Maharam – Layers and Borders.

The 2006 Layers collection consists of three embroidered fabric patterns: Layers Gardens, Layers Park and Layers Vineyard, which are available in two variations – single and double layer. Wool felt that is the foundation of Layers provides neutral textural complement for the embroidery. Thanks to the decorative stitching, felt and cutouts, Layers fabrics that are a part of the MoMA permanent collection add a hand-made feel to the industrially manufactured.

Borders collection is an homage to the centuries old weaving traditions, which were inspired by Mexico and Guatemala. Traditionally using small, back-strap looms these woven pieces of limited sizes are sown together, which is both a smart solution to a problem and an original design idea. Even though in the Borders collection the stitches are strictly decorative, the machine-made fabrics often have purposeful imperfections and lines that aren’t straight to give them more blood.

Polder sofa is also available with an additional cushion from a Hella Jongerius designed fabric, as well as the 2005 Bovist pouf in matching colours.

This month Vitra Design Museum introduces a new volume-exhibition catalogue dedicated to Pop Art – Pop Art Design! 

Kā visietekmīgais mākslas novirziens kopš 1945. gada, popārts līdz pat mūsdienām turpina veidot mūsu vizuālo kultūru. Šībrīža izdevumā, kas sastādīts komplektācijā ar tāda paša nosaukuma izstādi, pirmoreiz tiek īpaši izpētīts veidotais mākslas dialogs ar dizainu.

Svarīgākie popārta mākslas darbi tiek nostādīti blakus tā paša perioda dizaina objektiem, kas papildināti ar neskaitāmām ilustrācijām no sadzīves kultūras, interjera dizaina un laikmetīgās vēstures. As the most influential art movement since 1945, Pop Art continues to shape our visual culture to this day. A central preoccupation was the dialogue with design, which is being extensively investigated for the first time by the present volume, published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name.

Key works of Pop Art are confronted with design objects from the same period, complemented by numerous illustrations from everyday culture, interior design and contemporary history. The opulent image spreads are accompanied by comprehensive essays from renowned experts. They document how artists and designers availed themselves of similar motifs and strategies. M.a.s.s.a.s is the new collection by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso. It includes a modular sofa system with the addition of a standard armchair, small armchair and small table. The compact and controlled shape together with the extraordinary cuts of the fabric create an original asymmetry. The raised stitching accentuates a sharper silhouette, at the same time evening out its linear aesthetic. The structure itself consists of polyurethane foam but the particularly soft upholstery is achieved by combining fabric and wadding.

Since 1952 the Italian company Moroso creates upholstered designer furniture providing the highest quality mixed with exquisite design. By collaborating with such internationally renown designers as Ron Arad, Carlo Colombo, Enrico Franzolini, Marc Newson and by using clean and environmentally friendly production processes, Moroso offers elegance, comfort and endurance.

Patricia Urquiola became the head of Lissoni Associate design group in 1996 and thus has collaborated with such companies as Antares-Flos, Boffi, Cassina, Kartell and many others. Also her products have been chosen for the 1999 and 2001 International Design Yearbook.

Nīderlandiešu dizainers Valentin Loellmann ir izveidojis  neparastu un pasakainu, ar rokām taisītu mēbeļu kolekciju Seasons. Soliņi, ķeblīši, galdi - katrs ir savādāks un katrs ir neatkārtojams. Lai arī šo mēbeļu izmēri un funkcijas ir atšķirīgi, visām izgatavošanas process ir vienāds - gropētās tapiņas savieno riekstkoka zarus ar ozolkoka virsmām. Lai panāktu organiskāku un plūstošāku formu, salaiduma vietas tiek aizpildītas ar skaidu un līmes maisījumu. 

Mēbeles tiek apdedzinātas un apstrādātas ar vasku. Pēc virsmas apstrādes ar smilšpapīru, mēbeles tiek nopulētas un apstrādātas ar eļļu. Riekstkoka zari mēbelēm piedod dinamiku un katram individuālajam priekšmetam tiek piešķirts savs numurs.

The Dutch designer Valentin Loellmann has created an unusual and storybook-looking, hand-made furniture collection Seasons. Stools, benches, tables - each of them is different and unique. Even though the furniture's dimensions and functions vary, the construction process is the same - mortise-and-tenon joints connect hazel branches and an oak top. To attain an organic and smooth form, the connections are filled with a mixture of sawdust and glue.

The pieces are burned and treated with wax. After the top is sanded, they are polished and treated with oil. Hazel branches add a dynamic to the furniture and each piece is marked and numbered.

Es vēlējos, lai lāpa ir gandrīz kā viens no David Attenborough ziedu uzplaukšanas attēliem, lai tā ir kā jauns kaktusa, dzīvnieka vai gaļēdāja auga veids.

Tā stāsta Londonas Olimpisko spēļu lāpas dizaina autors Thomas Heatherwick. Dibinot savu studiju 1994. gadā, viņa galvenais mērķis bija apvienot arhitektūru, dizainu un tēlniecību vienā darbnīcā.

Thomas Heatherwick nekad neesot bijis problēmu atbildēt uz saņemtajiem e-pastiem. Tagad 42 gadus vecais dizainers saņemot simtiem ziņu dienā. 

 

Bet, tā kā Londonas Olimpisko spēļu atklāšanas ceremonijā elpa aizrāvās visiem, kuri ieraudzīja olimpisko lāpu, visi arī vēlējās zināt, kurš ir šī meistardarba autors.

Thomas Heatherwick stāsta, ka, ignorējot padomu netaisīt neko ar kustīgām detaļām, viņš esot padarījis darbu sev un savai komandai no Heatherwick Studio 204 reizes grūtāku. Lāpas dizains sastāv no 204 vara ziedlapām, un katra Olimpisko Spēļu dalībvalsts vienu ziedlapiņu varēs ņemt līdzi mājās. Tā nu Heatherwick Studio darbinieki, veidojot kallu ziediem līdzīgās lāpas sastāvdaļas, esot katru izveidojuši atšķirīgu un individuālu. 

Pats dizainers atzīst, ka lāpa, iespējams, esot vēl sarežģītāka par Šveices pulksteni.

The designer on everybody's lips

I wanted it [the cauldron] to be almost like one of David Attenborough's speeded-up plants, like it's a new kind of cactus or animal or carnivorous plant.

These are the words of the author of the cauldron for London Olympics – Thomas Heatherwick. He founded his studio in 1994 and his main objective was to unite architecture, design and sculpture in one practice.

Thomas Heatherwick never had problems replying to fan mail. Now the 42 year old designer receives hundreds of messages daily.

But as everyone who saw the Olympic cauldron at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, was completely in awe, everyone also wanted know who is the author behind the masterpiece.

Thomas Heatherwick tells that by ignoring the advice to avoid using moving parts in the design, he made the task 204 time harder for himself and his team from Heatherwick Studio. The cauldron's design consists of 204 copper petals and every country taking part in the Olympics will be able to take one home. Thus by creating the copper lily heads Heatherwich Studio workers made each of them different and individual. 

The designer himself admits that the cauldron is probably more complex than a Swiss watch.

The Finnish furniture company Inno that's represented by xcelsior will be present at the Habitare Furniture Fair. In addition to the Aura sofa and Intro chair, Inno will also present the latest models of the award-winning Kola series and the new chairs from Lab family.

Harmonious, two-seater sofa, which surrounds you and is perfect for creating peaceful interiors. Due to its high back it also works as a spatial divider.

Intro

Intro is a stackable wooden chair, which can be used in different public or private spaces. Even though Intro looks simple, its unique design combined with ergonomic proportions makes it suitable for different purposes alone, in a group or around a table.

Lab

Designer: Harri Korhonen

Lab is a light meeting or dining table, available in individual or modular version, which can be extended endlessly. Its wooden legs (birch / oak / stained, painted or natural) evoke a cozy warmth. Lab family now also includes a chair.

Kola

Designer: Mikko Laakkonen

Kola is an aesthetically and physically light chair which fits in public, modern and private interiors. The seat is made of 100% recyclable felt, and it has great acoustic absorption capacities. The seat can be renewed which gives the chair a longer life cycle. Kola chairs are fire resistant and easy to clean. The Kola family also includes an easy chair, rocking chair, a meeting or dining chair with different leg options and a small stacking chair with or without armrests or with a crossleg.

Kola has been awarded with Red Dot award: product design 2012.
