Flying flames from Ingo Maurer

The company Ingo Maurer (they refer to themselves as Ingo Maurer and Team) has constantly grown for four decades. At this moment more that sixty people are working for the company, even though its location – Munich – hasn’t changer since 1970.

By producing lighting objects, as well as various light installations, Ingo Maurer participate in design exhibitions, fairs, as well as work on light-planning. Company both sells their produce and creates individual solutions for specific and innovative projects.

As special novelty from Ingo Maurer in 2013 is Flying flames, which was created in collaboration with Moritz Waldemeyer. Flying flames is a new, flexible chandelier system. These unique LED candles are combined with simple and functional Downlight Elements. Flying Flames is designed to permit individual versions of a chandelier. You decide on the number of Flames and their colour. Add one or two downlights for a pleasant light on a table below the chandelier.

Cassina: Simon Collection

Simon International kompānija tika nodibināta 1968, gadā, kad Dino Gavina un Maria Simoncini iepazinās ar tā laika ietekmīgākajiem arhitektiem un modernās mākslas pārstāvjiem, lai popularizētu un attīstītu itāļu dizainu.

Kompānijas uzdevums bija veidot kulta kolekcijas dizaina entuziastiem, un tā darbojās arī kā kultūras izplatītāja un nesēja. Šīs vērtības Simon International dala ar vēl vienu vēsturisku kompāniju: Cassina.

2013. gada jūlijā Cassina pārņēma Simon brendu, tādējādi apvienojot divus iespaidīgus itāļu dizaina vēstures veidotājus. Cassina: Simon Collection

Simon International was established in 1968 when Dino Gavina and Maria Simoncini (from whom the company took its name) met some of the most influential names in architecture and modern art, to advance the great tradition of Italian design in the 1960s. The contribution of both cultural experience and manufacturing expertise converged to generate a cult collection for enthusiasts of design. The furniture designs became synonymous with a company that managed to act as a cultural promotional vehicle.

This was not the only company to encompass all the above values as is evident from the path taken by another historical company: Cassina.

The acquisition by Cassina of the Simon brand (in July 2013) merges two significant contributors to the history of Italian design.

The founders of these two companies, Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina decided that Cassina would

be the company to develop padded items and chairs while Gavina would take care of the furniture; they also established a contemporary lighting company (Flos, founded in 1962) to provide a complete range of interior furnishings for the new domestic environments of the era.

Gavina put the 1920s furniture designed by Marcel Breuer into its 1962 catalogue, but decided against including the 1929-designed furniture of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand considered to be too artisanal at the time; these designs were therefore transferred to Cassina in 1964 where they understood the untapped potential and set out to make the designs a worldwide success.

Both companies continued to collaborate with the best designers of the time, meanwhile organizing exhibitions and cultural events to promote their aesthetic ideals and ideas.

Both explored new ways of expression via everyday designs that were transformed into cultural talking points: Cassina through the Bracciodiferro collection and Dino Gavina through the Ultramobile collection by Simon, which led it to collaborate with renowned surrealist artists such as Man Ray and Meret Oppenheim.

The union of both companies offers the widest range of historically important and iconic design. Italian culture and highest quality with timeless characteristics.

Jean Nouvel uzsāka JND (Jean Nouvel Design) 1995. gadā, lai sadarbotos ar arhitektūras kompāniju (Ateliers Jean Nouvel) ar tās specifiskajām dizaina aktivitātēm. Jean Nouvel Designs sastāv no multidisciplināras grupas, kas darbojas gan interjera dizaina jomā, gan scenogrāfijas jomā, gan vizuālajās komunikācijās. Kopš savas dibināšanas Jean Nouvel Design ir attīstījuši un izveidojuši vairāk nekā simtiem objektu un mēbeļu.

Man vienmēr ir patikusi, Jean Nouvel saka, ideja par kaut ko, kas var pārvērsties par vēl ko citu; 1=2 galds, kuru pirms pāris gadiem izlaida Zeritalia un kuru šodien no jauna piedāvā Cassina, radās no vienkāršas idejas: tev ir divi sakraujami galdi: ja tu izmaini kāju augstumu un tu pacelt vienu no galdiem, lai abus savienotu, rezultātā izveidojas viens liels galds! Šī ir centrālā ideja: izveidot vairākas lietas, sākot no vienas; uztvert dažādas dimensijas un piedāvāt dažādus pielietojumus.

1=2 klāsts balstās sistēmā, kurā divi sakraujami galdi nodrošina automātisku nolīmeņošanos, kad tie tiek savienoti. Klāsts piedāvā galdus un konsoles mājām vai birojiem. Sākotnēji 1=2 ģimene tika veidota no 12 mm bieza norūdīta stikla, bet šodien tā ir pieejama 15 mm biezumā, kā arī dažādās krāsās. I am not a designer Jean Nouvel says, but an architect that makes design.

Jean Nouvel’s work is inscribed in the tradition of thinkers and draftsmen architects at all levels. Urbanologist and architect, Jean Nouvel is also a designer but he rejects categories:

I do not make any difference between when I draw a chair and when I think about an

architecture; I think that every project is a plan of total design. For every question made, I look for the “elementary” object, whose final shape corresponds to the “essence” of the idea. A suitable, unique answer which can testify our period and our civilization both culturally and technically.

Jean Nouvel created JND (Jean Nouvel Design) in 1995, in order to cooperate with the AJN architecture company (Ateliers Jean Nouvel), with its specific design activity. Jean Nouvel Design consists of a multidisciplinary group which operates both in the field of interior design, in scenography and in visual communication. Since its foundation, Jean Nouvel Design has

developed and edited more than hundreds of objects and furnitures.

I have always loved, Jean Nouvel states, the idea of something that can turn into

something else; the 1=2 table, which was launched by Zeritalia a few years ago and which Cassina re-edits today, was created from a simple idea: you have two small stacking tables: if you change the height of the feet, when you lift one of the tables up in order to flank it to the other, the result is a big table! This is the central idea: doing several things starting from only one; perceiving different dimensions and offering different uses

The 1=2 range is based on a system of two stacking tables that ensure an automatic

leveling when they are pulled together. The range includes tables and consoles for a

domestic use or for the office. Initially realized in a 12 millimeters toughened glass,

nowadays the 1=2 family is realized in a 15 millimeters toughened glass and in several colours. The feet, which integrate unidirectional castors, are made of brushed stainless steel and are fixed to the glass surface with an optical bonding.

The Spanish company VIBIA offers original and elegant light objects for every taste.

The news from VIBIA is the unique and unrepeatable Match, which is much more than a light fixture. The innovative product stands as a new lighting concept based on co-creation, using the product configuration software CREA. Match allows you to create structures arranged chaotically, automatically planned on-line and adapted to fit into the room or space available. The result are infinite artistic configurations based on thin rods of aluminum and LED terminals, forming a light sculpture that illuminates central themes of space and interior decoration.

The flexible and adjustable sofa was designed by Francesco Binfare after 20 years of typological and technological research. BOFFI: pasaulē slavenās virtuves un vannas istabas

Mūsdienīgu interjeru pasaulē Boffi ir sinonīms inovācijām un ekselencei virtuvju un vannas istabu jomā. 2010. gadā kompānija pievērsās arī inovatīvai pieejai skapju sektoram.

Kad 1998. gadā Boffi atklāj divas vēsturiskas vannas istabu kolekcijas – I Fiumi (Claudio Silvestrin dizains) un Minimal (Giulio Gianturco dizains), kompānija nostiprina savu reputāciju un Milānā tiek atvērts pirmais Boffi firmas veikals vannas istabām - Boffi Solferino. 2003. gadā veikals kļūst par Boffi tirdzniecības kodolu, piedāvājot arī virtuves un kopš 2010. gada arī skapju sistēmas.

BOFFI: world-famous kitchens and bathrooms

In the world of contemporary interiors, Boffi’s name is synonymous with innovation and excellence in kitchens and bathrooms. In 2010 company turned its attention and innovative approach on wardrobe sector as well.

The story of Boffi began in 1934, when Piero Boffi left Caproni and founded his own craftsmen-led company. The first Boffi factory is built in 1947 and Boffi’s sons Dino, Pier Ugo and Paolo join the company. In 1954 Boffi releases the first coloured kitchen The Series C, designed by Asti, Favre and Boffi.

The big event of 1963 is Joe Colombo’s Minikitchen, exhibited at the Triennale and MoMA. The compact and minimal kitchen system proved that by uniting innovative and creative approaches, it is possible to reinvent the term and notion of a kitchen.

In 1980 Boffi enters the bathroom sector with Antonio Citterio’s Factory which organically united high-tech with functionality. In 1990 Piero Lissoni is appointed as the company’s Art Director and creates Esprit and Latina.

When in 1998 Boffi releases two historic bathroom collections – I Fiumi by Claudio Silvestrin and Minimal by Giulio Gianturco – the company strengthens its reputation and opens the first mono-brand store dedicated to bathrooms - Boffi Solferino in Milan. In 2003 the store becomes the flagship for Boffi, also offering kitchens and from 2010 – wardrobes.

In 2001 Boffi becomes a founding member of Fondazione Altagamma – an association of luxury Italian design companies who enjoy an international reputation; the aim of the foundation is to promote its member brands, Italian style and culture worldwide.

In 2003 Boffi acquires the Norbert Wangen kitchen brand and in 2006 begins collaboration with the famous designer Naoto Fukasawa.

Grown mainly in Himalaya, China, India and Burma, nettle’s fibre is greatly appreciated for its softness, resistance and its similarity to vegetable silk. The transformation process of the herb into thread requires a complex firing, mixing the fibre with ashes and spring water.

Jute
Known as ‘the Golden Fibre’ for its shine, Jute is a plant that blooms in tropical regions, especially in India and Bangladesh. Highlights among its properties are the fact that it is 100% biodegradable and recyclable.

Silk

There is evidence to suggest that the first silk fabrics were produced around 3000 B.C. in ancient China. Coming from silkworms, silk is extraordinarily resistant and it is considered to be the longest filament produced by nature. Its structure reflects light at different angles, giving it a natural glow.

Afghan Wool

Originating from Afghanistan’s native sheep, this wool’s fibre called Ghazni is famous for reaching 30 cm long. This exceptional length and its slightly undulating and thin structure provides a high resistance and special softness. 

Natural beauty from Nanimarquina

The intrinsic beauty of the natural fibres connects us with the natural world. These fibres, of organic origins such as nettle and jute, or of animal origin such as silk and wool, have been specially selected to create this collection of carpets and to reflect the plurality that nature has to offer. 

These fibres are twisted together to become a continuous thread, a highly laborious manual process that enriches the fabric, providing a soft and unique texture to each carpet. Each thread, each knot, transports us to the universe of the rug’s beginnings.

The Eclipse lamp by the Brazilian designer Mauricio Klabin is a fascinating achievement in design. 

Its shade is fabricated from a sinlge ribbon-like strip of plastic that canbe adjusted to change shape and throw light in different directions. 

The metal frame has small, movable, stabilizing rings that allow the lamp to rest in many positions,  or can be removed completely to transform it into a hanging lamp. The company Objekto offers this intriguing lamp , which can also be seen at the MOMA in New York.

Now the lamp by Mauricio Klabin can be seen and purchased at the xcelsior design centre  in Raņķa dambis 1.

Paulistano krēsls: jaunums xcelsior piedāvājumā

PAULISTANO krēsls, Paulo Mendes da Rocha

1957. gadā Paulo Mendes da Rocha dizaina krēsls daudzus gadus rotāja slavenā Sanpaulu Atlētikas kluba telpas. Struktūras konstruktīvisma koncepts ir veidots no vienas, izliektas tērauda caurules, kas pārklāta ar kovilnu vai ādu. Krēslu raksturo estētisks vieglums un nepārspējams komforts. Paulistano krēsls ir izturējis laika pārbaudi, pierādot ikoniskā dizaina mūžīgo vērtību un meistardarba statusu.

Paulistano krēsls tika izveidots ciešā sadarbībā ar pašu Paulo Mendes da Rocha un ir viena no divām pieejamajām 2006. gada Architecture Pritzker Prize laureāta mēbelēm. Līdz šim krēsls bija pieejams tikai kolekcionāriem, bet šobrīd Objekto – ekskluzīvais un licencētais arhitekta projektu ražotājs – šo 20. gadsimta meistardarbu dara pieejamu visiem.

2007. gadā Paulistano krēsls tika iekļauts Ņujorkas MOMA muzeja pastāvīgajā kolekcijā, pievienojoties ikoniskākajiem laikmetīgā dizaina objektiem.

PAULISTANO armchair, Paulo Mendes da Rocha

Designed in 1957 by Paulo Mendes da Rocha, the Paulistano armchair was, for many years part of the lounges of the famous Athletic Club of São Paulo. The constructivist concept of the structure is made up from a single bended bar of steel, and its cover is made up of cotton or leather. The armchair is defined by aesthetic lightness and incomparable comfort. The Paulistano armchair has stood the test of time, proving the timeless value of iconic design and the status of a masterpiece.

The Paulistano armchair was created in close collaboration with Paulo Mendes da Rocha himself and it is one of the two available pieces of furniture by the 2006 Architecture Pritzker Prize award winner. Until now the chair was only available to collectors, but now Objekto – the exclusive and licensed manufacturer of the architect’s designs – makes this masterpiece of the 20th Century available to all.

In 2007 the Paulistano armchair was included in the permanent collection of MOMA New York, where it joins the most iconic contemporary design objects.
